HK's container throughput rises 1.2pc in January (End of Feb'2007 )

Figures released by the Hong Kong Port Development Council Secretariat show that the port's container volume rose 1.2 percent in January year on year to 1,902,000 Teu. Overall, HK handled about 23.3 million teu in 2006, an increase of 3.1 percent over 2005. Within this total, Kwai Tsing container terminals handled about 16 million teu up  12.4 percent over 2005.

Other terminals in HK handled the remaining about 7.26 million teu down 12.7 percent, which suggests that the container trade previously handled Kwai Tsing, the main container hub in HK. Kwai Tsing container terminals contributed 1,362,000 teu to total, an increase of 11.5 percent. Other terminals collectively handled about 540,000 teu, a decrease of 18 percent compared to the same month a year ago.top
